Steel Mill
New and retrofit industrial braking systems for steel mill cranes
Hindon’s mill duty brakes are the ideal solution for steel mill operators looking to upgrade their crane brakes. In addition to supporting customers with crane service brake retrofits, Hindon also has extensive experience with both new and retrofit projects involving emergency hoist brakes in steel mill environments.
Not only does Hindon provide the highest quality, most reliable, braking systems available, but we also have the application expertise and commitment to customer service to keep your cranes running and your people safe.
We provide bolt-in replacement braking systems designed to both AIST/AISE and DIN specifications. This means we can provide a replacement braking system for virtually any existing steel mill braking system.
Because we understand that some situations are urgent, we stock common sizes of inch and metric drum brakes, brake drums/wheels, and brake thrusters to get you back up and running as fast as possible.
If you’re not in an emergency downtime situation, we can work with you to develop a custom retrofit solution that is mindful of your existing design to provide to provide the performance upgrades you need in the most cost-effective way possible.

Featured Projects
Mill Duty Drum (Shoe) Brakes
Often used as service or holding brakes on electric overhead traveling cranes (EOT), main hoists, and auxiliary hoists, drum brakes are a critical part of any safe and reliable steel mill operation.
Thruster drum brakes are a reliable, easy to commission option as a holding brake in steel mill environments. These brakes can handle the challenging ambient conditions and high duty cycles which are common in steel operations.
If an existing crane is equipped with DC voltage, an electromagnetic drum brake may be the best brake option. These brakes actuate more quickly than thruster brakes and also provide torque adjustability.
Mill Duty Disc Brakes & Drum-to-Disc Brake Conversions
When it comes to emergency brakes for large ladle and bridge cranes, our mill duty disc brakes literally save lives. Hindon specializes in retrofitting existing heavy-lift equipment with fail-safe emergency brakes that will catch a falling load in the case of a failure in the drive-train or loss of power.
We also have extensive experience converting drum brakes to disc brakes, providing customers a cost-effective way to upgrade the safety and performance of their lifting equipment. Space constraints and missing information about critical parts of the system (like the motor) can provide unique challenges in these applications, but our industry experience and technical know-how enable us to design a system we know will work as intended.
Thruster disc brakes are a good fit for drum to disc brake retrofits in steel mill applications. As with thruster drum brakes, they are easy to commission and can handle the challenges of the ambient environment. Disc brakes, though, provide the ability to achieve higher torque outputs and the ability to handle higher rubbing speeds.
Electrohydraulic Thrusters
In addition to offering braking systems with various types of thruster brakes, we also provide comprehensive support for electrohydraulic thrusters. We stock commonly used thruster models, repair thrusters, and provide full engineering and technical support.
